Toby Tortoise and the Rolling Picnic

Toby Tortoise loved carrying things. He carried apples in his shell basket and smooth stones in his pocket. Once he carried three acorns home for Wren, though she had not asked for any.
On Saturday, the animals planned a picnic on Clover Hill. Toby packed cheese, crackers, a red cloth, a jar of berry jam, two pears, and one very large spoon. “I can carry the whole picnic!” he said.
At the bottom of the hill, Wren fluttered down beside him. “That basket looks very full.”
“It is fine,” said Toby, puffing out his cheeks. He took one slow step, then another. Squirrel hurried past with berry juice. Rabbit skipped by with carrots under both paws. Soon the others were over the hill, while Toby was still climbing.

Then Toby stepped on a round pebble. Bump! His basket tipped. The cheese rolled down the path. Crackers slid into the grass. The red cloth flew over Toby’s head and landed in a bush.

Toby tucked his head into his shell. “I wanted to bring everything,” he said softly.
Wren landed on his shell. “You still can bring something,” she said. “Just not everything at once.”

Wren tugged the red cloth from the bush and carried it in her beak. Squirrel gathered the crackers into a small paper bag. Rabbit balanced the cheese on a carrot leaf.
Toby picked up the round pebble and put it safely in his pocket, so nobody else would trip. Then the friends climbed the hill together.

At the top, the other animals cheered as the red cloth was spread on the grass. Toby set his empty basket in the middle. Inside was only the round pebble.
“What is that for?” Rabbit asked.
Toby smiled. He placed the pebble beside the crackers. “It is the picnic’s first guest,” he said.

Everyone laughed. They sat on the red cloth, passed the food around, and watched white clouds roll over Clover Hill.
Toby had not carried the whole picnic. But at sunset, he carried the pebble home, just in case it wanted another adventure.
