Bramble’s Moonlight Seeds

Bramble the little hedgehog had an important job in the Night Garden. Every evening, beneath the old fig tree, he counted the tiny blue glow-seeds.
“One, two, three...” Bramble said, touching each seed with his paw. When all twelve were together, the garden paths shone for the night animals.

One windy evening, Bramble counted, “Ten, eleven...” Then he stopped. The twelfth glow-seed was gone!
A little blue twinkle blinked near the garden gate. Bramble followed it past the sleepy sunflowers and under a bench. There was Pip, a field mouse, pushing the glow-seed beside a folded leaf.
“I’m making a little lamp,” Pip said. “My burrow is very dark.”

Bramble peered into the dark hole beneath the hedge. Then he looked at the shadowy garden path. “This seed helps everyone find the way,” he said. “But we can make you a lamp another way.”
They searched together. Bramble found a clear snail shell. Pip found three pale pebbles and a soft curled leaf. Bramble placed the pebbles in the shell, and Pip tucked in the leaf. The shell caught the moonlight and became a little silver lamp.

Pip carried the lamp into his burrow. A silver spot danced on the wall.
“I can see my acorn cup!” Pip squeaked.

Bramble gently rolled the glow-seed back beneath the fig tree. “Twelve,” he counted at last.

Soon, the garden paths glimmered blue again. Beneath the hedge, Pip’s little lamp shone silver.
Bramble smiled as he walked along, following one light, then the other.
