Pia and the Popping Seed

On a sunny balcony, Pia and her grandfather watch a small brown seed bounce from a paper packet toward a large blue flowerpot. Pia holds a watering cup.

Pia was watering the pots on her balcony when something went pop! A small brown seed sprang from its paper packet and landed in the blue flowerpot.

“Did you see that?” Pia asked Grandpa.

Grandpa peered over his glasses. “I saw one very bouncy seed.”

Pia tucked it under a little scoop of soil. She gave it a cup of water and put the pot by the sunny rail. Then she waited.

Pia smiles as she ties a fast-growing vine to a wooden stick in the blue flowerpot. The vine curls up the balcony rail toward the roof.

The next morning, a green curl poked through the soil. By lunchtime, it had two leaves. By bedtime, a thin stem held three more.

“Slow down!” Pia said, laughing.

But the plant did not slow down. Every day it climbed higher. Pia gently tied its stem to a wooden stick. The plant climbed past the stick, curled around the balcony rail, and reached toward the roof.

On the rooftop, Pia and Grandpa stand back and look up at a long vine. A large round green pod hangs from its tip in the wind.

One windy afternoon, Pia heard a faint tap-tap-tap above her head.

She and Grandpa climbed the stairs and opened the roof door. A long green vine curled over the roof edge. At its tip hung one round green pod, as big as a lunchbox. It trembled in the wind.

“Maybe that is why the seed popped,” Grandpa said. “It came from a popping plant.”

Pia and Grandpa stepped far back. The pod grew still.

Then—POP!

The pod opened like a tiny door. Dozens of soft white seeds floated into the air. They drifted over the chimney, past the water tank, and down toward the garden.

“They’re flying away!” Pia called.

“They are looking for soil,” said Grandpa.

Pia kneels in a sunny garden to look at a new green sprout. A blue flowerpot with another curling sprout sits on the balcony rail, while vines and round pods grow around the fence.

For the next few mornings, Pia checked the garden. At first she saw only grass, stones, and wet earth.

Then she spotted a green curl beside the bench. Another grew near the gate. One poked up from an old cracked pot where rainwater gathered.

Soon, little climbing plants curled around the garden fence. Their round pods bobbed in the breeze.

Pia kept the blue flowerpot on her balcony. Inside it, a new green curl was already reaching for the sun.

“Hello, bouncy seed,” Pia said. “Where will your pop go next?”
